Fabian Cancellara passed fit for Bradley Wiggins Olympic road race test

Bradley Wiggins must beat defending champion Fabian Cancellara if he is to win the London 2012 Olympic Games men's cycling time trial (credit: Getty Images)
Bradley Wiggins is odds-on to claim the gold medal for Team GB in the London 2012 Olympic Games men’s time-trial – but one of his big rivals has declared himself ready to challenge.

Four-time world champion Fabian Cancellara will defend his Olympic title in East Molesey, Surrey against 8/15 favourite with Paddy Power and 2012 Tour de France hero Wiggins.

The 32-year-old Swiss cyclist crashed when leading a breakaway in Saturday’s road race won by Alexandr Vinokourov and suffered serious cuts and bruises.

It was feared Cancellara had suffered a repeat of the collarbone injury he sustained at the Tour of Flanders in April, but the Swiss Olympic Association confirmed he would make the Hampton Court Palace showpiece.

Cancellara can be backed at 7/1 with Coral to repeat his 2008 Beijing heroics, while reigning world champion Tony Martin of Germany splits Wiggins and the UCI ProTeam RadioShack-Nissan rider at 9/2 with Bet365.

Cancellara said: “I feel better with every hour passing. The pain is still there but I am in good hands.

“I am a hard man. I’ve had a lot of things happen this year.”

However, 2011 Tour de France hero Cadel Evans of Australia has withdrawn from the event due to fatigue, leaving Michael Rogers as the only participant from his country.

Evans finished well down the field in 80th position behind Vinokourov in the road race.
