Snubbed David Beckham to still have Olympic role

David Beckham’s odds of lighting the Olympic flame have been slashed by bookmaker Ladbrokes.

Stuart Pearce may have snubbed Beckham in his Team GB football squad, but Ladbrokes don't think Lord Coe will also give him the cold shoulder as it's now 5/1 that Beckham is given the honour of lighting the Olympic flame during the opening ceremony.

“Golden Balls” was the 1/3 favourite to captain the side to gold this summer. However the baton has been handed over to Ryan Giggs, who's chalked up at 8/3 to wear the Team GB armband against Senegal, with Micah Richards (5/2) and Craig Bellamy (7/2) next in the betting.

It's 3/1 that lightning strikes twice and Beckham heads to the event as a member of the coaching staff, repeating his fate at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Ladbrokes spokesperson Jessica Bridge told Bettingpro.com: “It looks like Becks will be spending the next few weeks practising lighting the flame rather than taking penalties. He played a pivotal role in bringing the Olympics to London and the odds suggest he won't be rebuffed for a second time by organisers.”
