200 metres to halt the Usain Bolt

LONDON, ENGLAND - AUGUST 08: (L-R) Isiah Young of the United States, Alex Quinonez of Ecuador, Usain Bolt of Jamaica, Aldemir Da Silva Junior of Brazil compete in the Men's 200m Semifinals on Day 12 of the London 2012 Olympic Games at Olympic Stadium on August 8, 2012 in London, England. Usain Bolt overcame Jamaican rival Yohan Blake to win the Men’s 100m Final on Sunday evening and it is the young up-and-comer who will come closest to upsetting the reigning champion over 200m on Thursday.

Bolt is aiming to become the first ever Olympian to complete a double track title defence following his triumphs over 100 and 200m in 2008. He completed the first part with an Olympic record-breaking performance over the shorter distance on Sunday, and is fancied to complete the feat tomorrow.

The Jamaican superstar is priced at 1/6 at Totepool to land the gold medal, with nearest rival Blake available at a relatively generous 4/1. Both will line-up in this evening’s semi-final heats fully expecting to make the final.

Blake was fancied to push Bolt for gold on Sunday but his fellow countryman showed a clean pair of heels in the final 75m of the race to leave his rivals floundering, despite having made a poor start to the race.

Bolt’s poor start can partly be put down to the new rule implemented which disqualifies competitors for one false start. It means that Bolt, who has false-started on a number of occasions during his career, is taking extra caution with his launch, and that could hand an early advantage to Blake.

But over 200m, many believe that Bolt will have enough in the tank to make up for a poor start, and eat up any advantage his rivals are able to establish during the opening metres.

We don’t yet know the make-up of the final, but there is one 200m specialist who we are extremely likely to see line-up alongside Blake and Bolt on Thursday evening.

That man is Warren Weir, another Jamaican, who is priced at 40/1 to cause what would would probably be ranked as the upset of the century and take the 200m gold. Weir, 22, and the other two Jamaican stars have been drawn in separate heats for the semi-finals.

Weir finished third behind Bolt and Blake in the Jamaica trials ahead of the games, and could help the nation complete a 1-2-3 in tomorrow’s final. He is available at 11/8 to win the race with Bolt and Blake removed from the market, and that’s a bet that offers particularly good value.

The most fancied athlete for the event from outside the borders of Jamaica is the USA’s Wallace Spearmon, who took a 200m silver in 2005 at the World Championships in Helsinki. He is priced at 10/3 to win the race without Blake or Bolt, but it’s unlikely he’ll have enough in the tank to take down Weir.
