Melbourne Storm are just one point behind league leaders St George Illawarra following their 21-4 victory over Sydney Roosters.

The Storm were under strengthened with Billy Slater, Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Dane Nielsen all in camp with Queensland ahead of the State of Origin Game 2 on Wednesday.

The Roosters were also without Mitchell Pearce, Nate Myles and Anthony Minichiello because of Origin call-ups but the Storm deserved the win on the night.

The Storm went ahead thanks to a Gareth Widdop penalty but in the 17th minute the Roosters went in front when Braith Anasta’s cut-out ball was collected by BJ Leilua and he went over and that was a good as it got for the visitors.

Melbourne retook the lead six minutes before the break when Justin O’Neill crossed over following a great break from Maurice Blair, Widdop’s conversion made the score 8-4 at half-time.

Shortly after the break a Widdop penalty made the score 10-4 and they extended their lead even further with 20 minutes remaining when Beau Champion pounced on a loose ball to score, Widdop added the extras for a 16-4 advantage.

Widdop then sealed the match with a field goal before O’Neill grabbed his second score of the evening to make the final score 21-4 in favour of the Storm.
