The Boston Bruins will be on the brink in their own rink when game six of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals gets underway on Monday.

Neither the Boston Bruins nor the Vancouver Canucks have won a Stanley Cup since 1972, the year when a Bruins' captain last hoisted the most prestigious trophy in hockey. However that will change in the next several days as the conclusion of the 2011 NHL playoffs approaches and either Vancouver or Boston will emerge as league champions.

Friday night's game five saw Maxime Lapierre of Vancouver score the only goal of the game as the Canucks won game five over the Bruins 1-0. As a result the Canucks are one win away from claiming their first Cup in franchise history, an embarrassing drought for hockey fans in BC's largest city.

The Stanley Cup Finals have had a clear pattern in 2011 as Vancouver have won all three of their home games and in each case by just one goal. Additionally, the game winner has invariably come in the third period or in overtime as Boston have competed well in each game.

In the games from Boston, however, Vancouver have not been close to being competitive as the Bruins outscored the Canucks 12-1 in the two games combined from the TD Center. Conventional analysis holds no water in this series as the Bruins are facing elimination despite turning a net goal difference of +8 over the five games played so far.

Game six will come from Boston as the Bruins and their contingent hope to beat Vancouver once again. It could be harder to blow the Canucks out with the Stanley Cup actually in the building however it's hard to ignore what happened in games three and four from Boston as the series shifts back there for game six (8pm ET; Monday).

Even if Vancouver fail in Boston, an opportunity they will not want to pass up without a huge fight, the Canucks will have a home game in game 7 to complete the playoffs. That game, if needed, would take place on Wednesday, June 15th at 8pm ET and by Thursday morning one of the lengthy droughts will come to an end.....and one will continue for who knows how much longer.
