Typically the award goes to the best player in the playoffs on the Cup winning team however many think that the Award could go to Tim Thomas even if Vancouver win the Cup.From NHL.com's article:"While Vancouver has several viable MVP candidates, Boston goalie Tim Thomas appears to be the runaway leader to take home the hardware. The five NHL.com writers that have covered the Final from its beginning each cast a non-binding vote Monday morning and Thomas was the name on four of the ballots. Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo earned the other vote."The five writers polled were Bob Condor, Dave Lozo, Corey Masisak, Shawn Roarke, and Dan Rosen. Rosen was the only writer who did not pick Thomas as he pointed out that the Conn Smythe Trophy is for the whole playoffs, not just the Stanley Cup Finals. However his point seems to ignore that Tim Thomas has played well over the whole post-season as his .937 save percentage proves, the best save percentage in the playoffs (Luongo's is .919).Boston can still win the Cup but even if they do not there is precedent for a losing goaltender to win the Conn Smythe Trophy as Jean-Sebastien Giguere won the Award in 2002/03 as part of the second place Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
