Many Bettingpro readers like to place accumulator bets on horse racing, something that is popular due to the fact that the potential winnings are a lot bigger than you would get from backing just one horse to win its respective race.

The term accumulator usually applies to any bet which involves three or more selections, which means that betting customers can pick out a horse for every race on a particular card and strike a multiple bet with any of the bookmakers recommended by Bettingpro.com.

An accumulator is sometimes referred to as an acca, here is an example of an accumulator bet that could have been placed at Aintree in 2012:

Darlan 2/1
Silviniaco Conti 2/1
Finian’s Rainbow 6/4
Always Waining 11/1

Placing a £10 accumulator on the above four horses at the stated odds would have seen a betting customer win £2,700. This pot of gold at the end of an accumulator bet is the reason why this type of wager is popular. Placing a £10 single on any of the four horses to win their race would have produced a much smaller return.

The reason why accumulator odds get so big is because the odds are multiplied together. So using the above example, the 2/1 about Darlan gets multiplied with the 2/1 that Silviniaco Conti wins the following race. A £10 double on these horses alone would have returned £90.

An accumulator doesn’t just apply for horse racing, with many betting customers placing a weekend acca on the football coupon which is great when you fancy the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Barcelona and Real Madrid to win their respective games.

There is also the chance to place bets like Yankees and Canadians which mean you can pick a certain number of horses and have lots of doubles and trebles so they don’t all have to win their races in order for you to get a return.
