Over the next three days, we will watch some brilliant Ryder Cup action and it's always nice to know what the various formats of the competition are.

On Friday morning, Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker will play Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher in a fourball match. This means that each player plays with a ball each and a hole is won by the player who has shot the lowest score each time. If one of Woods and Stricker wins the first hole, then Team USA go 1 up.

On Friday afternoon, the Day 1 foursomes take place and we're only dealing with two balls here. So the Molinari brothers might be playing Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, with both pairings only having one ball between them.

That means that Mickelson might tee off on the first hole and then Johnson would play the next shot off the fairway or out of the rough. The honour then returns to Phil who would make the third shot and so on.

Finally, it's the singles on Sunday and that's just straight matchplay between the twelve members of each team.

Europe are a best price 7/10 to win the Ryder Cup with Paddy Power.

The USA are available at 2/1 with Stan James to win the Ryder Cup.

Pinnacle Sports have the best price about the draw, offering 13/1.
