Betfred red-faced after early £500,000 pay-out on Manchester United

Fred Done couldn’t see past Manchester United winning the Premier League title a month ago, with the man behind Betfred claiming that the Red Devils were ‘past the post’ after a 2-0 win at Blackburn Rovers which saw Sir Alex Ferguson’s team go five points clear at the top of the table.

Fred’s conviction about United winning the title was so strong that he decided to pay out on the Red Devils retaining their Premier League crown, shelling out over £500,000 in the process.

However, United subsequently dropped points against Wigan Athletic and Everton which means they trailed City on goal difference going into Sunday’s matches and a Premier League title success for the blue half of Manchester will now cost over half a million.

Last month on Twitter, Fred said the following:

"Even with the (Manchester) derby to come a five point lead is just too much for City, so once again I'm letting my United punters have their dough early to the tune of just over half million quid," he said.

"Back in 1998 Fergie told me to never pay out early again but Sir Alex need not worry, I've not got it wrong this time, United are past the post for a record twentieth Premier League title."

Indeed, that early pay-out on United in 1998 was also a mistake, with Arsenal claiming the title and causing Fred some expense in the long run.
