William Hill begin countdown to 2010 Aintree Grand National

- 16 Feb 2010

The unveiling of the weights sounded the traditional countdown to the John Smith’s Grand National today, where the official handicapper has allotted 11st 4lbs to William Hill’s ante-post favourite Tricky Trickster.

The seven-year-old has been strongly supported since his win in last Saturday’s Aon Chase at Newbury, and now leads the charge at the head of the betting at 12-1, ahead of Aon runner-up and 16-1 chance Niche Market.

After saddling 44 runners since 1992 a win in the famous handicap still eludes Paul Nicholls. William Hill make the Champion Trainer a 7-1 chance to break his duck in the 2010 running where his hand includes Tricky Trickster, and strong performers from last year in My Will, and Big Fella Thanks.

David Hood, spokesman for William Hill, said: ‘’Results such as last year’s 100-1 winner Mon Mome don’t come any better for the bookies, but we’re realistic that it could be another 40-plus years before we see another! Deep wounds are regularly inflicted on us by Nicholls, McCoy, and Walsh and a win for any of that combination would more than address the balance in the punters’ favour.’’

The Irish are available at 5-2 with Hills to overcome a two-year hiatus and take the trophy back to the Emerald Isle. Black Apalachi spearheads their challenge at 20-1 with other notable entries including Backstage, Casey Jones, and Becher Chase winner Vic Venturi all priced at 25-1.

Amongst their specials William Hill have priced-up the odds on what age the winner will be, highlighting a difficult task for ante-post favourite Tricky Trickster who will bid to become the first seven-year-old since Bogskar in 1940 to take the Grand National winner’s title. Hills make it an 11-2 chance that a seven-year-old or younger wins the National, and 7-4 favourite that a nine-year-old prevails for the third consecutive year.

William Hill are offering punters a free £25 be on this year's Aintree Grand National.
