Grand National Going update - Saturday

Aintree have watered the ground ahead of day two of the Grand National meeting

Aintree have watered their courses ahead of Ladies’ Day and the going on the Grand National circuit is now good to soft, good in places.

An absence of rain over the last few days meant the going dried out to the point where, on day one of the Grand National meeting, many jockeys felt the ground was riding good.

With bright, sunny but cool weather expected for Ladies’ Day and Grand National day, Andrew Tulloch, the Clerk of the Course, had no option but to add 3-5mm of water.

The ground on the Mildmay and hurdles courses is now good, good to soft in places.

Tulloch said: “I imagine the ground will be similar on Friday to how it was on Thursday, unless we get any showers.

“We are forecast one or two, but then we’ve been forecast them for the majority of the week and they are yet to materialise.”

Finian’s Rainbow is the star equine attraction on Ladies’ Day when he aims to follow up his Queen Mother Champion Chase victory at the Cheltenham Festival by landing the Melling Chase.

He is currently a stand-out 6/4 with Coral to boost trainer Nicky Henderson’s chances of capturing the jump trainers’ championship from title-holder Paul Nicholls.
