Donald (20/1 Tournament Outright) needs to finish in the top seven at TPC Louisiana in order to regain top spot in the rankings from Rory McIlroy, but his chances of doing that looked unlikely after he shot a one-over-par 73 in round one. However, the Englishman responded in superb fashion on day two, reeling off an eagle and five birdies in a superb bogey-free seven-under-par round that put him six-under through 36 holes.

At six-under, Donald is six shots behind leader Jason Dufner (4/10 Joint Favourite). The American was also flawless in the second round, matching Donald’s effort with an eagle and five birdies to improve to 12-under for the tournament, a shot ahead of Scotland’s Russell Knox (25/1) and American pair Ken Duke (16/1) and John Rollins (10/1).

Steve Stricker (4/1 Joint Favourite) and Ernie Els (8/1) remain in contention after following up a first-round 66s with second-round 68s, putting them 10-under alongside Greg Chalmers. A shot further back, on nine-under, are Camilo Villegas (25/1), Cameron Tringale (16/1) and Graham De Laet (40/1).

Rickie Fowler (20/1) made his move on day two, with eight birdies and a bogey leading to a 65 that lifted him to eight-under for the tournament, while Justin Rose (40/1) is three shots further back as he produced an improved second-round display that saw him climb from par to five-under.

US Masters winner Bubba Watson survived the cut by just one shot. The American shot a one-under-par 71 for the second day running, with his two-under total enough to ensure he will continue playing over the weekend.

In the second round the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Jason Dufner leads at 12-under par.
