Webb Simpson’s final round of 68 ensured the American won the 2012 US Open, with Jim Furyk and Lee Westwood dropping away

Webb Simpson only turned pro four years ago and the 26-year-old was the surprise winner of the 2012 US Open following a final round of 68 which saw him attain a total score of one over.

Simpson was joint-eighth going into the final round, although conditions at the San Francisco course meant the course played a good deal longer and 68 was a very good final round score as a result.

Michael Thompson and Graeme McDowell finished a shot behind, with Thompson scoring an impressive 67 which was just one off that excellent 66 on the opening day.

As for McDowell, he went into the final round as co-leader with Jim Furyk, although the northern Irishman struggled to make birdies and finished with a 73 which will leave the 2010 US Open champion to reflect on what might have been.

There were five players who were a further shot behind, including Furky, Jason Dufner, David Toms, John Peterson and Padraig Harrington. The latter carded an impressive 68 and might have had a chance if he hadn’t posted a first round score of 74.
