The Englishman was one of the big movers on Day Two of the US Masters and although he is five shots behind  midway leader Rory McIlroy.

"I decided at the start of the day that, instead of Saturday being my moving day, I'd better make it Friday," he said.

"I had to try and get into contention. As well as Rory has played, you don't want to get too far behind."

Westwood, who was world number one at the tail end of 2010, believes that his experience of playing in major tournament will now be crucial in the next two days.

"It's part of the value of being experienced, being in contention before to be very patient and expect the unexpected," added the 37-year-old.

"Experience counts for a lot around here. This is my 12th Masters, and only over the last three or four years have I started to get the hang of it and sort of feel my way around."

Westwood can be backed at 12/1 with bet365 to win the 2011 US Masters.
