USPGA calls press conference for 18:30 GMT to discuss World’s number one golfer
The golfing world is set to find out today when the best player on the planet, Tiger Woods, is to end his self-imposed exile and return to the sport.
Following revelations about his private life, at the end of last year, Woods took a break from the game, but there has been growing speculation in recent weeks that he is set to return to competitive action, with the upcoming US Masters looking a likely comeback tournament.
In his press conference on February 19th, Woods stated:
"I do plan to return to golf one day, I just don't know when that day will be. I don't rule out that it will be this year.
"When I do return, I need to make my behaviour more respectful of the game."
That had suggested that it may be late in the year before the 14-times major winner would be back in action, although USPGA commissioner Tom Fincham, who has called a press conference for 18:30 GMT today, said:
"I'm as excited as everybody else to see him back, I hope this spring, but my sense is we'll know pretty soon,
"Everybody's done looking back at the circumstances that resulted in him stepping away from the game and [are] now focused on when he's going to play golf. I think that's good. I think that means people are paying attention to what he said."
Woods is 4/1 favourite with Ladbrokes to win this year’s US Masters, which takes place in April.
