American drops out of top 10 US qualification spots

Tiger Woods dropped out of the top 10 US qualification spots for this year’s Ryder Cup, which takes place at Celtic Manor in October, and the 34-year-old is now in danger or missing out on the bi-annual competition.

If Woods does not reclaim his spot in the top 10, then the only way he could represent the US would be as one of team captain Corey Pavin’s wild card picks. After Pavin’s claims that Woods is not guaranteed a spot in his team, SkyBet have made it a 7/1 shot that the world’s number one golfer is handed a wild card for the competition.

Sky Bet's golf betting spokesman Andy Thorp told Bettingpro:

"Woods is still out nursing an injury and with uncertainty over his return date, coupled with the fact that the US does not use a world points list like Europe, there is a distinct possibility that Tiger Woods will not accumulate enough points to qualify automatically.

"If this were the case, presumably Corey Pavin would have little choice but to pick him as a wild card selection. However, given Woods' very average Ryder Cup record and the media hype that would surround him, would Pavin really want to pick him and would Woods want to play?"
