Bookie Paddy Power is not only offering the best odds on Tiger Woods winning this week’s Open Championship but are also once again offering SEVEN places in the each way betting.
Paddy Power has pushed out Tiger Woods to 12/5 from 15/8 for a Turnberry triumph as punters firmly back the British. With Paddy Power leading the way since last Monday in offering seven places in this year’s Open Championship, punters have not been slow in looking at the value odds away from Tiger to give them a run for their money for a top seven finish.
Meanwhile, at 28/1 defending champion Padraig Harrington’s indifferent form has seen Sergio Garcia, almost by default, usurp the Irishman for second favourite at 22/1. Such has been Harrington’s slump that Paddy Power’s traditional bogeyman has been replaced by young gun Rory McIlroy (25/1) as the most backed player and worst result on their book – an almost unprecedented feat for the Irish bookie.
Paddy Power, spokesman for the bookie, said: “For almost as long as I can remember Padraig has been unrivalled as the number one choice for our punters - not even Tiger could compete with him. But Master McIlroy is the real deal and Padraig finally has someone to challenge him in the affections of Irish punters.”
European golf’s man of the moment Martin Kaymer has been cut from 40/1 to 28/1 to win at Turnberry. The German has won the last two tournaments on the European circuit and the momentum has clearly been noticed b y punters.
Beyond Kaymer, backers are lumping on a long overdue home win. The patriotic punts are coming thick and fast for Ian Poulter and Paul Casey, who are both now 28/1 from 50s a couple of weeks ago. In contrast though, not all the Brits are being backed as Luke Donald has drifted out to 80/1 from 50s.
As for the Americans, David Duval’s renaissance at the recent US Open saw his odds slashed from 150/1 to 80/1 as punters piled on and Duval is now the second worst result in Paddy Power’s book after McIlroy.
Paddy Power’s traditional Open special also looks at the colours of Ian Poulter’s trousers on Day One. Having discussed the possibilities of wearing tartan on his Twitter at last week’s Scottish Open Poulter is 7/4 to sport the pattern with a more traditional golfing colour of beige following at 4/1.
