The Open Championship 2011 odds

Rory McIlroy 8/1 Open Championship favourite (credit: Wikipedia)
It is no surprise that Rory McIlroy heads to Royal St George’s as the favourite to win the 2011 Open Championship.

McIlroy’s ability to win one of golf’s Majors was criticised earlier this year when the Northern Irishman suffered a dramatic collapse on the final day to throw away victory at the US Masters. But the 22-year-old world number four responded to his doubters in spectacular fashion with his dominant victory at the US Open in June, and he can be backed at 10/1 with bet365 to make it back-to-back Major wins this week.

World number one Luke Donald finds himself in the strange position of being second favourite behind McIlroy in the Open Championship odds and the 33-year-old Englishman, who won the Barclays Scottish Open this past weekend, is best-priced at 12/1 with bet365 to secure his first Major title.

Also looking for a maiden Major crown is second-ranked Lee Westwood, whose reign as golf’s top-ranked star was questioned earlier this year due to his failure to win one of the sport’s biggest prizes since turning professional in 1993. The 38-year-old Englishman is 12/1 (SportingBet) to finally break that duck with a victory at the Open Championship that could propel him back to the top of the Official World Golf Ranking.

In fact, English golf may never have been any stronger and that is reflected in the Open Championship odds. Ian Poulter, the Volvo World Match Play Championship winner, is 70/1 (bet365), with Paul Casey 80/1 (bet365) and Justin Rose 50/1 (SportingBet).

Europe has been the dominant force in golf in 2011 and it is no surprise to see plenty of other stars from the continent appearing high in the Open Championship betting, with world number three Martin Kaymer available at 25/1 (SkyBet), Sergio Garcia 30/1 (Betfred) and 2010 US Open winner Graeme McDowell 33/1 (Victor Chandler).

The United States is strongly represented as they look to fight back against the Europeans, and Steve Stricker will be one of the men leading the charge from “across the pond”. Stricker warmed up for this week’s tournament by winning the John Deere Classic for the third successive year, and the 44-year-old from Wisconsin is available at 35/1 (William Hill). Other American participants with Open Championship odds in double figures are Nick Watney is 33/1 (SportingBet) and four-time major winner Phil Mickelson is 50/1 (SportingBet), while Matt Kuchar can be backed at 40/1 (Paddy Power).

The defending champion is South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen and he is out at 100/1 with Paddy Power to retain the Open Championship title he won at St Andrew’s last year. But one man who will not be in the running to win this title again is former long-time world number one Tiger Woods. Woods, the winner in 2000, 2005 and 2006, has been ruled out due to knee and Achilles injuries.
