Scottish Open Betting Tips - Three Against The Field for the Scottish Open

The Scottish Open serves as the annual warm-up for the Open Championship and as usual it has attracted a quality field, headed by defending champ Luke Donald.

The world number one went round in 19-under 12 months ago, which is even more impressive when you consider the event was shortened to 54 holes because of the weather, and he's 8/1 favourite with BetVictor for a repeat. Opposing him this week are former Open champions Padraig Harrington, who is next best at 16/1, Louis Oosthuizen and Ernie Els. Phil Mickelson is the big name American in the field but is as big as 33/1 with Sportingbet after looking out of sorts in recent weeks. Each-way punters will be delighted to know that several firms are pushing the boat out by offering enhanced terms of one quarter the odds, six places and they are bet365, Boylesports, Paddy Power, Stan James and Ladbrokes.

The Castle Stuart Golf Links is hosting for the second year in a row. Wet weather and a lack of wind 12 months ago allowed players to take the course apart and this has prompted a few changes, with 150 yards added to its length (now a shade under 7,200 yards) and a few extra bunkers placed strategically. However, it looks like we're in for another wet week and the soggy fairways and receptive greens will again be conducive to low scoring. The shorter hitters will certainly not be too inconvenienced and just about any type of player could win, although those with solid links form will no doubt be able to save a shot or two on the way round.

My Three Against The Field:-

Nicolas Colsaerts @ 20/1 Paddy Power (1/4 odds, six places)
No player has ever successfully defended this title, but it's more the single figure price that is putting me off Donald. He can win of course but there is better value to be had in backing the Belgian ace, who has gone from strength to strength since finishing third (-14) here last year. As it stands, he's on the verge of making the Ryder Cup squad after a string of fine efforts, which include victory in the Volvo World Matchplay, his second Tour title, second in the China Open when defending, third in Sicily (played by the sea), and fourth at Fancourt, which is played on a links layout. At his best when the scoring is low - he posted 24-under when securing his maiden victory in China - he has the game to destroy this week's test, with his long driving ensuring he will be able to attack the flags with a short iron. Of course none of that has been lost on bookmakers but the 20/1 still looks a fair price with the extra place on offer a nice insurance.

Branden Grace @ 50/1 Boylesports (1/4 odds, six places)
The South African is arguably even better value considering he has twice finished in front of Colsaerts this season on links-style tracks. The first time was back in January when winning a playoff for the Volvo Golf Champions title and he was three shots clear of the Belgian when landing the China Open in April (21 under). That made it three wins for the season and he's since finished fifth at Wentworth and 17th in last week's French Open on a track that wouldn't have played to his strengths. Driving accuracy is not necessarily one of those but there's plenty of room off the tee this week, and like Colsaerts his aggressive style of play is likely to yield a stack of birdie opportunities on the rain-softened greens. At 50/1, he's terrific each-way value to make it four wins for the season.

George Coetzee @ 50/1 Stan James
The third and final pick is still looking for his first win on the main Tour but was a prolific winner on the Sunshine Tour and is still only 26 - he turns 27 next week. He's threatened to break through on many an occasion, including last week when reaching Marcel Siem's winning score of eight-under on Saturday afternoon, only to fade to 17th after a closing 76. That was still a decent effort, though, and his best since finishing 14th in the Wales Open, which was following on from 21st at Wentworth. One of these weeks he's going to pop up at a price and it's more likely to happen when the scoring is low as he's a real birdie machine and loves to attack the pins. Again, he's great value at 50s with the extra place a bonus.

Recommended Bets:-

Nicolas Colsaerts 2pts each-way @  20/1 Paddy Power (1/4 odds, six places)
Branden Grace 1pt each-way @ 50/1 Boylesports (1/4 odds, six places)
George Coetzee 1pt each-way @ 50/1 Stan James (1/4 odds, six places)
