Ryder Cup Top European Scorer Betting Preview

With Colin Montgomerie saying he will play every member of his team on Friday, you could make a case for backing any of the 12 in the Top European Points Scorer market.

That said, Monty will have a good idea of which players are going to be the cornerstones of his side and even wins for some of the lesser lights might not guarantee they will play again until Sunday's singles. Therefore, the players to concentrate on look to be the big guns of Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Graeme McDowell, Lee Westwood (if his knee holds up), Luke Donald and possibly Ian Poulter.

Of these, I like the chances of US Open winner Graeme McDowell (7/1 bet365), who also won at Celtic Manor earlier this season in scintillating style and played some of Europe's best golf at Valhalla, where he scored 2.5 points out of four. He looks almost certain to team up again with Rory McIlroy, with whom he combined superbly in last year's in World Cup and Vivendi Trophy (won three matches out of four and his singles), and will probably lead off in Friday's fourballs. They should gather a couple of points at least.

Martin Kaymer (11/2 general) is Europe's other recent major winner and he looks likely to form a partnership with Lee Westwood in fourballs and foursomes, providing Lee is up to it after injury. He looks a better bet than McIlroy (6/1 Sportingbet), who can be a little too aggressive for his own good and might not be risked in the foursomes, which require players to keep the ball in play and not make mistakes.

Ian Poulter (9/1 Skybet) was Europe's top scorer last time, winning four points out of five, and won the Accenture Match Play Championship at the start of this season. However, apart from a top-10 in the Masters, he's done precious little since and his best form may be behind him for the year.

A bigger danger looks to be Luke Donald (8/1 Coral) as he can be expected to play in at least four matches. His dependability off the tee allows him to grind our pars in fourball play while a more aggressive partner attacks, and his trademark control makes him a must for foursomes. However, I'd rather back him in the Top European Wild Card market at 7/4 (Stan James) against Padraig Harrington (poor form this season) and Edoardo Molinari (unlikely to see enough action).

Recommended Bets:

Graeme McDowell 2pts @ 7/1 bet365
Luke Donald Top Top European Wild Card 4pts @ 7/4 Stan James
