Rory McIlroy has revealed he is restricting his golf schedule to try to avoid becoming burned out.

The Northern Irishman, who celebrates his 23rd birthday on May 4, is playing at the Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, only his second tournament in eight weeks.

“I don’t want to be burned out by the time I’m 30,” said the US Open champion, who won the Wells Fargo under its previous title of the Quail Hollow Championship two years ago.

“I want to try to prolong my career as much as I can. I sometimes take a bit too much out of myself, especially at the end of a season.

“The most important time of the season for me is the start of April until the end of August. That’s when all the big tournaments are and when you want to play your best.

“I know I’ve been criticised a bit for not playing as much as some other guys leading into these few weeks, but I know I’ve a big stretch coming up and I want to be as fresh as possible.”

McIlroy is 9/1 with Betfred to retain the US Open crown next month, 8/1 for the Open at Royal Lytham and the same price with Ladbrokes for the US PGA Championship.

Another reason for McIlroy to limit his schedule is so he can spend time with his girlfriend, Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

He added: “I’m trying to find the perfect balance between golf and having a normal life and everything else.

“For me there’s more to life than just golf, although people might be surprised to hear that. We both travel a lot and it’s very important that you find time to do the things you want to do.”
