Masters champion Bubba Watson has charged up the leaderboard on ‘moving day’ at the Open golf 2012, rising into a tie for fifth as he compiled a superb third round.

The big-hitting American, level par overnight after rounds of 67 and 73, began with a brilliant tee shot at the opening hole that produced a birdie, two more of which followed on the front nine.

There was another hat-trick of birdies at holes 10, 12 and 13 and even though the 33-year-old dropped a shot at the next, he was still four under par for his round.

Although still six shots behind leader Brandt Snedeker, the bookmakers slashed Bubba’s odds for the title to a best price of 40/1 with Bet365.

It was another disappointing day, however, for Rory McIlroy and the world No 2 added a 73 to yesterday’s 75 to fall back to five over par and in a tie for 66th place.

Lee Westwood has not enjoyed a much better tournament than the man one place above him in the world rankings and the Englishman, who played the third round with Tom Watson, was tied for 57th after finishing on four over.

“I've not done anything differently this week but I came in not hitting it great and I've continued not hitting it great, and that's the reason I'm four over par and not better,” said Westwood.

Five-time former champion Watson has only 1995 hero John Daly behind him of the 83 players who made the cut, but is getting in some handy links practice ahead of next week’s British Senior Open at Turnberry where he so very nearly won the Open itself in 2009.
