The 42-year-old, who held a share of the lead after two rounds, shot a one-under-par 69 on Saturday to head into the fourth round on five-under, just ahead of American Dustin Johnson.

Clarke, looking to become the third Northern Irishman to win a Major in almost a year, made a fine start with a birdie at his very first hole of the day, only to give that shot back with a bogey at the par-four fifth. A birdie at the par-five seventh was immediately cancelled out with a bogey at the par-four eighth as he made the turn in 35, but a third birdie of the day, at the par-four 12th, was enough for him to improve his overall score despite a number of missed short putts on the day.

Johnson, meanwhile, compiled one of the day’s best rounds as he completed the Royal St George’s course in 68. The 27-year-old bounced back made the turn in 35 after making two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine, and he hauled himself up the leaderboard with birdies at the par-four 10th and 12th before a bogey at the par-four 13th halted his run. Johnson immediately responded with back-to-back birdies at the par-five 14th and par-four 15th, but he will be ruing a bogey at the par-four 17th that prevented him taking a share of the lead into Sunday.

Rising star Rickie Fowler is two shots further back in a share of third place alongside Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn, who shot 71 on Saturday. The 22-year-old American, who made his professional debut just two years ago, coped well in the wind and rain in Kent as he carded four birdies and two bogeys in a two-under-par 68 that improved his total to two-under after three rounds.

Popular Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez remains in contention despite dropping two shots in his third round. The 47-year-old bogeyed the par-four fourth and par-three sixth in a two-over-par 72 that saw him slip to one-under for the tournament, where he is joined by Lucas Glover after he made three bogeys on the day to lose ground on the leaders.

Both Martin Kaymer and Phil Mickelson are still in the running as part of a six-strong group of players on par, but any hopes Rory McIlroy had of clinching a second straight Major title came to an end with a disappointing four-over-par 74. Unlike playing partner Fowler, the 22-year-old Northern Irishman failed to get the better of the wind poor conditions as he three bogeys and a double-bogey sent him sliding down the leaderboard to four-over through 54 holes.
