McIlroy rescued par at the second but slipped to two-over with his second bogey of the day at the third.The Northern Irishman steadied the ship with four successive pars before finally registering his first birdie of the competition, sinking a 10-foot putt at the eighth, and a par at the ninth saw him make the turn in 36.A third bogey of the day followed at the 13th as rain fell on Royal St George’s, but McIlroy limited the damage with a second birdie at the 17th. He almost completed the round in an even-par 70, but his birdie putt at the 18th rolled left before the hole, forcing him to settle for a one-over round.
