The current world number one, seeking to win his first Major, came unstuck with three bogeys over the five holes after the turn as a 71 put him alongside US Open champion Rory McIlroy.

Donald started well enough with successive pars before making his first birdie of the day at the par-three third. A bogey at the par-three sixth saw him return to par, but the 33-year-old responded immediately with a birdie at the par-five seventh.

However, things went sour after the turn as the Englishman bogeyed the par-three 11th. Donald then went over par for the first time at the 13th when, after his second shot landed in the rough and his subsequent chip fell 10 feet short, he rolled his putt left of the hole.

Another bogey at the 15th saw him fall to two-over, but Donald reduced some of the damage with a third birdie of the day at the par-four 17th.
