Much like the players at Royal St. George's, we had mixed results on day one of the 2011 Open Championship. A small profit was made thanks to Steve Striker's three ball win and Ian Poulter's tie with Yuta Ikeda but Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy were unlucky losers in their three balls.

Both players will recover from their opening setbacks and rounds of 72 and 71 keep them in contention but for the second round at Sandwich we will focus instead on some groupings that look easier to figure out, particularly those in the morning, where scoring conditions will be at their best.

The first selection is the 2010 US Open champion Graeme McDowell, who is out at 08:42 GMT with Bubba Watson and Jason Day. G-Mac outscored his playing partners on Thursday, despite beginning with a double bogey six on the first hole and his 68 was one of the best rounds of the day. The Northern Irishman looked comfortable and composed once he had found his rhythm and he will be expecting to put in a strong performance on Friday to establish himself as one of the tournament leaders. He is 5/4, at Ladbrokes, to at least shoot a lower score than Watson or Day and that looks an absolute minimum for McDowell.

Another player who will be looking to be amongst the leaders by the end of play tomorrow is Martin Kaymer. Like McDowell, the world number three shot an opening round of 68 and he is more than capable of putting together a round that will see him jump to the top of the leaderboard. He is playing with Phil Mickelson, who has never gotten to grips with links golf and looked uncomfortable all day on Thurday, and reigning Open champion Louis Oosthuizen. The South African was two over par on the opening day and there is more likelihood of him going backwards than forwards on Friday. Odds of 6/5 that Kaymer outscores that pair look unmissable.

The same could well be the said about the 2/1 that Frederik Andersson Hed shoots lower than his playing partners Davis Love III and Robert Allenby on day two of the Open. The Swede was second at last week's Scottish Open and his 68 on Thursday makes him a contender again this week. The 39-year-old was one of the few players who scored well who didn't make his birdies in the last nine holes and that shows that there is even more improvement possible tomorrow. His playing partners both performed well in their opening rounds but neither is in the kind of form Andersson Hed has shown recently.

Form, or lack of it, is what drives our final selection. Brian Davis finished five over par on day one, with David Duval even worse at eight over. Both look destined for an early exit from Royal St. George's, whereas playing partner Camilo Villegas, who is on three over, still has an opportunity to make the cut. The Colombian has only failed to make it to the weekend in one major tournament in his career and he will be desperate to avoid that fate this week. He is even money to shoot the lowest round of his three ball and that is a must bet.
