No golf tournament is ever won on the opening day and that is especially true of the 2011 Open Championship, with the course at Sandwich proving testing for even the world's top players. Thomas Bjorn shot an early round of 65 and is the joint leader in the clubhouse, alongside 20-year-old amateur Tom Lewis, but apart from the Dane there were very few of the players who went out in the morning on Thursday who managed low scores.
That was due to high winds, which died down in the afternoon and made the course far shorter and more forgiving. The winds are expected to stay away again on Friday morning, which means that the same players are once again going to benefit from favourable conditions. This is good news for the likes of Graeme McDowell (-2), Darren Clarke (-2), Martin Kaymer (-2), Phil Mickelson (par) and Lee Westwood (+1) who are all out before 09:30 GMT and will, therefore, be back in the clubhouse before 14:00. It is, however, bad news for Rory McIlroy (+1), Rickie Fowler, Luke Donald (+1), Sergio Garcia (par), Ian Poulter (-1) and Bjorn (-5) who begin their rounds after lunch and may not be finished until 19:00 or 20:00.
