Bjorn good bet for Omega Masters title

The 2012 European Tour heads to Crans-sur-Sierre this week for the Omega Masters tournament.

Recent golf headlines have been dominated by the Ryder Cup and Jose Maria Olazabal’s wildcard picks, but the European tour continues in the Alps at one of the most picturesque and longest-running tournaments in the calendar.

Thomas Bjorn is the defending champion and the Dane is a good bet at 25/1, with Betfred, to repeat the feat this time around. Last year, a phenomenal nine-under par final round saw him beat off the challenge of Germany’s Martin Kaymer. As one of the Ryder Cup vice-captains under Olazabal next month, confidence will be flowing and there is no reason why he cannot repeat his feat.

Pre-tournament favourite, and Ryder Cup player, Peter Hanson can be backed at 16/1 in the Alps.

But an outsider with a fantastic chance this week is Spain’s flamboyant Miguel Angel Jimenez, who has a fantastic record at Crans-sur-Sierre, especially over the final round. The 48-year-old, who has 18 European Tour wins in his career, averages under-68 for his last 16 rounds over the course. Another Ryder Cup vice-captain, Jimenez is 30/1 to finish Sunday in pole position, a bet well worth a punt when you consider how calm he is under pressure. Jimenez held off a later surge from Italy’s Edoardo Molinari two years ago in Switzerland to pick up his first Omega Masters title and you would not want to bet against him doing the same again. That time round he finished with a four-under par 67.

Meanwhile, Yorkshireman Simon Dyson can be backed at an appetising 40/1 to claim victory. Dyson does not have a particularly good reocrd at Crans, his best finish being a tie for forth 10 years ago, but his game has improved in the last five years and there is no reason why he cannot be pushing to get his hands on the trophy.

Wales’ Jamie Donaldson is among the form players going into the event, and looking to pick up his second European Title in just over two months. He can be backed at 30/1 at Crans, where he finished joint-third last year. If those odds do not grab you then back the 36-year-old to be in the lead after round one on Thursday - slightly longer at 33/1 – but, on his current hot streak, well worth a punt.
