The Mansfield player, nine times a runner-up on the tour, is bidding to take advantage of many top players being in action at the Players’ Championship in Florida.

He carded an opening bogey-free six-under-par 66 to find himself in joint second place, two shots behind Spanish leader Alvaro Velasco.

Wilson - who has slumped to No 475 in the world rankings, lost his tour card last year and did not play at the qualifying school to clear up some health issues - was the joint second favourite on Betfair with Magnus Carlsson of Sweden who also shot 66.

Velasco was the favourite thanks to a 64 that contained seven birdies in his last 12 holes.

“I was consistent all day and putted very well,” said the 30-year-old, winner of the 2010 European Challenge Tour rankings but who lost his card last year after finishing 127th on the Race To Dubai.

“I gave myself many good birdie chances and managed to hole a lot of them. If you hit it in the right spots the course is quite easy, but if you’re in the wrong place it’s easy to get in trouble. I can’t remember the last time I made such a good start.”

Also on six under par was Tommy Fleetwood, winner of the Challenge Tour last year and who, at No 192 in the world, is the highest ranked player in the field.
