Luke Donald has become the first man to top both the US and European money lists and the world number one has now set his sights on major success.

Luke Donald's third place finish in the Dubai World Championships ensured that he finished top of both the European and US money lists this season and he becomes the first man to finish the year as the 'undisputed' world number one.

The Englishman had need to finish in the top nine in Dubai to hold off a late surge from Rory McIlroy, who had to win to have any chance of overhauling Donald in the European race. The Northern Irishman couldn't make much impact and finished 7 shots behind Donald and 10 behind tournament winner Alvaro Quiros.

Donald, who won £4.19 million on the US PGA Tour in 2011 and  £3,632,685 on the European Tour, has yet to win a major title and the 34-year-old admitted that would now be his primary target in 2012.

"There's a lot still to achieve," Donald said. "The beauty of this game is that you are always looking for ways to improve.

"I'd love to pick up a major. It's fun being number one but I know there are lots of great players chasing me and that will keep me motivated to work hard."

It is 4/1 at Bet Victor that Donald manages to win a major in 2012 and he is currently 18/1 at totesport to win the year's first, the US Masters. It is 250/1 at bet365 that he completes the 'Grand Slam' but just 2/9 with the same firm to fail to grab any of golf's four biggest prizes next year.

Donald is currently 12/1 at Sky Bet to finish top of the PGA Tour Money List in 2012, with McIlroy 9/1 with the same firm. Tiger Woods is the favourite, at 9/2 with Bet Victor.
