Bob Bubka tip sparks €1.2million betting frenzy

Yesterday’s US Open winner, Lucas Glover, should have been a dream result for bookies, however Paddy Power were left counting the cost after a guest golf pundit on a leading Irish radio show tipped up the un-fancied Yank at massive odds of 175/1.

Veteran golf pundit Bob Bubka was a guest on top Irish radio show ‘Off The Ball’ on Newstalk Radio last Wednesday and singled out Glover for success in this year’s US Open at odds of 175/1.  His recommendation triggered a betting frenzy in support of the South Carolina native which resulted in his odds tumbling from 175/1, before the tournament started, to odds of 11/8 at the start of the final day of play.

His eventual victory cost Paddy Power a total of €1.2m, an unprecedented amount for a complete outsider winning a golf Major.

Paddy Power told Bettingpro this morning “Glover’s win should have had us cracking open the champagne but thanks to Bob Bubka we’re still counting the cost. It’s not far off the damage that a Harrington or McDowell win would have set us back.  We’re hoping Bob gets a bad case of laryngitis the week before the British Open and keeps his gob shut!”
