Jeev Milkha Singh qualifies for The Open with Scottish Open win

Jeev Milkha Singh claimed the penultimate place in the The Open championship when he won the Scottish Open in a play-off against Francesco Molinari.

The 40-year-old Indian holed a 12ft birdie putt on the first extra hole to deny the Italian family a second Scottish Open victory in three years after Molinari’s brother Edoardo won the event in 2010.

The pair both finished regulation play 17 under par and fought it out for the title after Scotland’s Marc Warren had blown a three-stroke lead over the final four holes.

The 31-year-old Glaswegian double-bogeyed the 15th, then bogeyed the next two at Castle Stuart in Inverness.

Singh had set the target with a round of 67 and overnight leader Molinari then forced sudden death by holing a nine-foot par putt on the last for a 72.

The eventual champion was already assured of the one Open spot on offer at the start of the play-off because Molinari was already exempt for Royal Lytham.

It will be only Singh’s second appearance in the event - he missed the cut at Carnoustie five years ago – and he is 150/1 with Paddy Power for the crown.

Of being granted the chance to capture the title after his early finish to the 72 holes, Singh said: “I was just enjoying a cup of tea and some chocolate cake and watching it on television - and suddenly got excited.

“I think God has been kind. I think the field came back and I'm very fortunate.”

Warren, whose collapse saw him miss out on a place at the Open, said: “I may need a little help to get to sleep tonight.”

Asked if ‘devastated’ was the right word to describe how he felt, the 31-year-old Rangers fan managed a smile and replied: “Not quite yet. I’m sure it will.

“It will be disappointing watching The Open (an event the former World Cup winner has failed to qualify for 10 times). I had it in my hands.”
