The PGA Tour returns to the American mainland this week for the Humana Challenge in Palm Springs, California.

For the first time in 2012 the format of Humana Challenge, formerly known as the Bob Hope Classic, will be a traditional four round Pro-Am tournament, but played over three different courses. However, it is still part of the Tour’s annual schedule, and is also part of the Tour’s FedEx Cup competition, which makes it a big target for competitors to come out on top.

There are some big-name players set to be involved with the most notable being Phil Mickelson (18/1 Outright Winner @ Betfred) who is certain to come into the equation for success this week. He has picked up two victories from nine career starts at the Humana Challenge and his average finish is 12th which makes him an attractive proposition.

However, be wary that it is an earlier than usual start for Mickelson on the Tour this year so it is worth considering the possibility of some rustiness in is game, particularly in the earlier rounds following an off-season break from the action.

What will boost Mickelson is his willingness to go for low scores on courses where a 59 is not beyond the realms of possibility.

Reigning FedEx Cup champion Bill Hass (18/1 Winner) has played in the Humana every year since 2005 and has been there or thereabouts in the past two tournaments. The 29-year-old fired a 30-under-par to win the then 90-hole event in 2010, before losing in a play-off to Jhonattan Vegas 12 months ago.

Therefore expect another real sustained challenge from Haas over 72 holes in 2012 and don’t be surprised if he is still in with a shout come Sunday’s final round.

Our third pick is long-shot Kevin Streelman (80/1 Winner) who has enjoyed a decent record at the Humana Challenge in the past with a score of 39-under-par from his past 10 rounds. Streelman has the ability to go long and aim low which should also help his cause, not to mention the good rapport he usually builds up with the amateurs he plays alongside.

And, with three out of the four rounds involving amateurs, then that is an attribute which should stand him in good stead.
