Phil Mickelson will be targeting his third Humana Challenge title when the tournament gets underway this week at La Quinta Country Club.

The first three rounds of the four-day tournament will be played in a pro-am format, each pro-am team consisting of one professional and one amateur, with each group consisting of two professionals and two amateurs, while Sunday's final round will feature professionals only.

Successful players in the past have been a mix of fearless putters and players who hit a high percentage of greens in regulation.

Two-time winner and all-time money leader of the event, Mickelson, will be gunning for victory for a third-time. Mickelson was the winner in both 2002 and 2004 and is one of seven players to have won the tournament on numerous occasions. However, this will be Mickelson's first appearance anywhere since November. Both titles are two of Mickelson's 39 PGA Tour victories, the second most among active PGA Tour golfers.

Mickelson is set to be inducted into the hall of fame in May, and will be joined at Humana and in the hall of fame by Australian Gregg Norman, who makes his first Humana Challenge since 1986. Mickelson and Norman join an impressive field that includes defending champion Jhonattan Vegas, 2010 Humana Challenge champion Bill Haas, 2001 PGA Championship winner David Toms and 2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson.

Bill Haas is clearly comfortable in La Quinta, and has made the cut on all seven occasions, resulting in five top 25's. Hass also won in 2010 and only just lost out in a playoff last year.

Scotsman Martin Laird enters the tournament after taking a week off following his second-placed finish at Kapalua. Laird was in second-place last year before the final round but fell away after a disappointing round. Expect Laird to make a move this week though.

Matt Kuchar finished runner-up in 2010 and also finished seventh in 2011. Kuchar is a formidably consistent player, and has an uncanny knack of avoiding birdies.

The Sony Open winner Johnson Wagner enters the tournament on top form having carded consecutive top 10's for the first time in his career and will be a threat this weekend.
