Hong Kong Open results – McIlroy surges to Fanling victory

Rory McIlroy kept his Race To Dubai aspirations intact by storming to the Hong Kong Open title on Sunday.

McIlroy began the final day three shots off the lead in Fanling, but the Northern Irishman showed his class with a final-round 65, sinking a birdie from a bunker to clinch a two-shot victory.

The US Open winner’s rounds had gotten progressively worse over the first three days after he followed up a bogey-free first-round 64 with scores of 69 and 70. But McIlroy, twice a runner-up here, saved the best for last as he reeled off five birdies in a bogey-free five-under-par 65 on Sunday.

And he told Sky Sports afterwards: “This one does mean a lot, I wanted to win this tournament so badly since that play-off in 2008.

“I've had to wait a couple of years to get there, but finally to get this trophy in my hands is very special.

“It meant a lot to go out there today knowing that I had to play well to keep myself in the race to Dubai, and probably to keep myself in second place in the world rankings.

“There was a lot to play for so to produce the sort of golf that I did today is very pleasing.”

McIlroy now heads to next week’s Dubai World Championship knowing that he can win the Race To Dubai if he wins the tournament and world number one Luke Donald finishes 10th or lower.
