Two late blunders meant Rory McIlroy had to settle for a share of the Hong Kong Open lead at the halfway stage.

McIlroy looked on course to retain sole possession of the lead at Fanling until he shot two bogeys over his final three holes, slipping back to seven-under alongside Alvaro Quiros, a shot ahead of Panupol Puttayarat.

The Northern Irishman was flawless in a bogey-free first round and while he was unable to replicate that on Friday, four birdies and a bogey over the first 15 holes put him in a strong position to head into the weekend out in front. However, McIlroy’s day ended in disappointment as he bogeyed the par-four 16th and 18th to shoot 69, but that did improve his total to seven-under.

Meanwhile, Quiros began the day tied for the lead and enjoyed a solid start with three birdies over his first nine holes. But things turned sour over his final nine as three bogeys – one of which came at his final hole – and one birdie meant he had to also settle for a one-under round.

Puttayarat put himself in contention with a bogey-free five-under-par round on Friday, and he is joined on six-under by Richie Ramsay after the Scot shot five birdies and a bogey in a four-under effort.

Miguel Angel Jimenez, Danny lee and Pariya Junhasavasdikul are tied on five-under, while Marcus Fraser, Soren Kjeldsen, David Horsey, Martin Wiegele and Peter Hanson are all four-under at the midway point.
