Francesco Molinari established himself as the clear favourite to win the Scottish Open with a brilliant 10-under-par first round of 62 at Castle Stuart.

The in-form Italian Ryder Cup player set a new course record to take a two-shot lead over Alejandro Canizares of Spain and is now the general 11/4 market leader with the bookmakers to lift the trophy on Sunday.

The 29-year-old from Turin is enjoying a fine year having won the Spanish Open and finished runner-up in the French Open last weekend thanks to a superb final round which meant he missed out on victory by just one stroke.

“I know it won’t last forever,” Molinari said of his blistering form in his last two competitive rounds. “But I hope to keep it going a bit longer.

“Obviously next week (The Open), but the next month or so is really big for the Ryder Cup. That, probably more than The Open, is in my mind.”

Second-placed Canizares can still be backed at 28/1 with Paddy Power, while defending champion Luke Donald is the 6/1 second favourite after opening with a five-under-par round of 67.

The world No 1 bogeyed two of his last five holes, which took some of the gloss off his return to action following a break since missing the cut at the US Open.

“After three weeks off from competitive golf that was a nice solid round,” said Donald. “Obviously I let a couple slip at the end but overall I'm pleased.

“It's always hard when you've had a little bit of time off to be completely 100% sharp, but it feels like I'm right on the cusp of figuring out exactly what I need.

“I had seven birdies, which means I’m doing a lot of things right.”

Tied for third on seven under par are Raphael Jacquelin of France (20/1 with Paddy Power) and Denmark’s Soren Kjeldsen (28/1).
