Dustin Johnson claimed FedEx St Jude Classic title after Rory McIlroy fluffed his tee shot at the 18th hole
Rory McIlroy was the joint leader of the FedEx St Jude Classic on Sunday night before hooking his tee shot into the middle of a lake and a subsequent double bogey saw Dustin Johnson claim victory instead.
McIlroy will be left wondering what might have been, with the world number two missing the 18th fairway by a long way, although credit goes to Johnson for triumphing in only his second event since returning from a back injury which ruled him out of the 2012 Masters.
"I was at home for 10 weeks or something - it was tough," said Johnson, who now moves back into the world's top 10.
"Last week I was a little rusty and didn't finish off my rounds, but this week I finished a lot better."
The top of the leaderboard changed 26 times during a frantic final round, with McIlroy claiming birdies at the 2nd, 4th, 7th and 11th to regain the lead and he was two shots ahead at one stage.
However, the northern Irishman ultimately finished three off the pace set by Johnson who recorded a 66 which was his best round of the tournament, having shot 70, 68, 67 and 66 over the four days.
