Rory McIlroy's round of 65 on Day Two of the FedEx St Jude Classic has seen him shoot to the top of the leaderboard in Memphis.

Rory McIlroy arrived in Memphis having missed three successive cuts on the PGA Tour but the Northern Irishman has bounced back in style with opening rounds of 68 and 65 in the FedEx St Jude Classic to sit top of the leaderboard at the halfway stage of the tournament.

The world number two admitted that he had been struggling and claimed that it was refreshing to see his name at the right end of the leaderboard as it takes the pressure off ahead of the upcoming US Open.

"The goal this week was obviously to see some improvement, to get some competitive rounds and get into contention and I'm right there heading into the weekend," he said.

"It's nice to see my name on that part of the leaderboard. It's not nice when you're struggling to make the cut on a Friday afternoon.

"It's nice to be through to the weekend obviously. It's obviously even nicer to be leading and have a great chance. It's going to be a great experience and a great way to prepare for the US Open next week. I'm happy with how I'm playing and with how I'm controlling the golf ball."

McIlroy is now a best price of 21/20 with bet365 to win the FedEx St Jude Classic.
