The rain may have caused delays in the Ryder Cup on Sunday, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the European players, who won 5 and halved one of the day’s foursomes and fourballs to take a 9 ½ - 6 ½ lead into Monday’s singles.

Lee Westwood and Luke Donald inflicted a 6 & 5 defeat on Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker in the first of the matches, with Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell also impressive in a 3 & 1 win over Zack Johnson and Hunter Mahan.

Peter Hanson and Migue Angel Jiminez won 2 up against Bubba Watson and Jeff Overton, while Padraig Harrington and Ross Fisher were 2 & 1 winners over Jim Furyk and Dustin Johnson.

Phil Mickelson continued his poor form at Celtic Manor, with Ian Poulter and Martin Kaymer beating the world number 2 and partner Ricky Fowler 2 & 1.

The Molinari brothers, Edoardo and Francesco were the only European pairing not to win, halving with Stewart Cink and Matt Kuchar.

The singles are scheduled to begin at 9am on Monday morning and Europe are now in a commanding position to win the 2010 Ryder Cup.
