Ernie Els win 2012 Open Championship

Ernie Els has won the 2012 Open Championship after an incredible collapse from Adam Scott who dropped four shots in the final four holes at Royal Lytham & St Annes.

Ernie Els claimed his second Open Championship title after a dramatic final day's play at Royal Lytham & St Annes in which Adam Scott conspired to lose despite holding a three shot lead when standing on the 16th tee.

The Australian had played a marvellous tournament all week but bogeyed each of the final four holes to fall from 10 under par to six under after the 18th after a closing round of 75.

Els, by contrast, shot a 68 on Sunday with a back nine of 32, four under par, to put himself in contention for the Claret Jug. The South African admitted after the win that he was surprised to be crowned champion as he didn't believe his score of seven under par after 72 holes would have been good enough to win the tournament.

Sunday was, however, marked with poor scores with Graeme McDowell, who started the day on seven under par, shooting a round of 75 to drop down the leaderboard and Tiger Woods carding a 73 to finish joint third with Brandt Snedeker.

Luke Donald was one of the few players to finish under par at a windy Royal Lytham & St Annes and he was rewarded with a joint fifth place finish with McDowell. Those who bet with Paddy Power will have been celebrating the final round of 65 by Nicolas Colsaerts as the Belgian's seventh placed finish (tied with Thomas Aiken) meant that his backers will have been paid out at 1/4 odds on each way bets.
