Tiger Woods is halfway to ending his drought after taking a three-shot lead into the third round of the Chevron World Challenge.

Woods, who has not won a tournament in over two years, shot a five-under-par 67 on Friday to improve his total to eight-under, three shots ahead of Matt Kuchar and KJ Choi.

The former long-time world number one made a superb start with an eagle at the par-five second and a birdie at the par-three third, and he bounce back from a bogey at the par-four sixth by birdying the par-three eighth to make the turn in 33.

Woods hit a hot streak with a run of eagle, birdie, birdie between the par-five 11th and par-five 13th, and only a couple of late slip-ups prevented him from taking a bigger lead into the weekend. The American went double-bogey, birdie, bogey between the par-three 15th and par-three 17th, but he still holds a strong lead.

Choi was unable to keep pace as a one-over-round saw him slip to five-under alongside Matt Kuchar, who shot 67, while Zach Johnson and Hunter Mahan are four-under after their respective rounds of 67 and 58. Rising star Rickie Fowler is a shot further back on three-under and a two-under-par round.
