Chevron World Challenge Betting Preview

Related Articles

Punters have two superb end-of-term invitational events to get stuck into this week: the Nedbank Challenge (previewed elsewhere) and the Chevron World Challenge from Sherwood Country Club in California.

While the Nedbank has a field of just 12, the Stateside has a slightly larger field of 18 and the quality is up too with the likes of world No.2 Tiger Woods, US Open champion Graeme McDowell and his Ryder Cup team-mates Ian Poulter (12/1 general), Rory McIlroy (14/1 Coral) and Paul Casey (14/1 Skybet), who were all in great form in Dubai last week, set to do battle for a first prize of $1.2m.

Woods, who could drop down to No.5 in the world rankings if he finishes outside the top three this week, is favourite at 4/1 with Stan James for an event he has won four times in the past. However, given he's winless for over a year now and the quality of opposition he faces, he hardly smacks of value at that price and has to be taken on.

Fedex Cup winner Jim Furyk is Woods' nearest rival in the betting at 9/1 (William Hill) but he too has a vulnerable look on his his first run back from a long spell on the sidelines. He is joined by a host of leading young Americans, including Dustin Johnson (16/1 Stan James), Matt Kuchar (16/1 general), Hunter Mahan (25/1 Skybet) and Nick Watney (22/1 Skybet). The last-named only scraped into this event after the late withdrawal of Martin Kaymer and the newly-wed will have the advantage of playing in his home state.

However, there is a strong British challenge this week and Luke Donald looks the best bet of them all at 11/1 with Betfred. While  Poulter, McIlroy and Casey were battling it out for top spot last week, Donald was quietly going about his business, claiming his fourth top-10 finish in as many starts and bagging another big cheque in the process.

He's made a career out of that with earnings in excess of $25m and it's true that he doesn't win as often as he should on Tour. However, this is no regular event and the less-pressurized nature of it clearly suits him well as one of his six career wins came here in 2005, albeit on a different course. That said, this week's relatively short par 70, 7,027-yard track won't inconvenience him at all and he's almost certain to give you a run for your money.

Of the rest, Camilo Villegas makes some appeal at 28/1 (Skybet) as he was fifth here in 2008 and recently finished eighth in Australia. His putting often lets him down, though. Last year's fifth Zach Johnson and the under-rated Bubba Watson - 25/1 and 401 respectively with bet365 - are also worth considering for an event being shown live on Sky Sports all four days, starting 9.00pm (UK time) Thursday.

Recommended Bet:

Luke Donald 2.5pts each-way @ 11/1 Betfred (1/5 odds, 1.2.3.4.)
