British Open 2012 betting tips - 3 outsiders worth backing

Davis Love III is performing remarkably well this year considering his Ryder Cup commitments and looks a good bet to finish in the top 10 at the British Open 2012.

The American Ryder Cup captain could have been forgiven if he had let his game lapse due to his focus on the impending biennial showpiece, but nothing of the sort has happened.

Instead, at the age of 48, the 1997 US PGA champion is still producing some commendable results and has finished in the top 30 on four of his last five outings.

That sequence has included an excellent third place at the St Jude Classic thanks to four rounds in the 60s – a feat he repeated in the Greenbrier Classic on his latest start.

And it must not be forgotten to what Love III owes his place in the Royal Lytham & St Annes line-up.

With no special invitations handed out just because of his Ryder Cup role, the man from North Carolina had to earn his spot and did so by finishing ninth at Royal St George’s last year.

That result was further proof that Love III is an accomplished links player – something he also showed when finishing fourth and fifth respectively at the 2003 and 2004 British Opens.

At 12/1 with Paddy Power, the veteran looks great value to sneak into the top 10 again.

Another player who can earn himself a guaranteed spot in the 2013 British Open with a top-10 finish at Royal Lytham is Sweden’s Fredrik Jacobson.

The Gothenburg-born, Florida-based 37-year-old knows how to plot his way around a links course and three of his last six British Open appearances have yielded top-20 finishes, including a career-best sixth in 2003.

Jacobson finally gained his first victory in America last year and that appears to have given his confidence a huge boost, for since then he has been second in the WGC-HSBC Champions event and registered top-20 finishes in both the Masters and US Open.

His superb short game will be ideally suited to this week’s test and while unlikely to win, it is easy to see Jacobson being in the top 10 come Sunday night at odds of 8/1 with Stan James.

Also available at the same price with the same firm is the third recommendation in the top-10 finish market, K J Choi.

The Korean has not been having the best of years but there are definite signs over the last month or so that he is approaching peak form - three top-20s during that time including the US Open.

Choi showed up well when the wind blew hard in the 2007 and 2008 British Opens at Carnoustie and Royal Birkdale, so will not be fazed by conditions this week which are likely to test the world’s finest golfers to the hilt.
