Ernie Els was crowned the 2012 Open champion but the South African owes his fourth major title to the collapse of Adam Scott in the last four holes.

The South African finished with a two under par round of 68 on a windy Sunday at Royal Lytham & St Annes and, on a day when scoring was difficult, that proved to be enough to win the 2012 Open Championship.

However, seven under par would not have been a winning score had Adam Scott not blown his opportunity to claim a first ever major title in the final four holes. The Australian finished with four consecutive bogeys for a round of 75, which saw him slip to six under par, having been eleven under at the start of the day.

Bookmakers Ladbrokes reported that Scott had been as short as 1/50 to win the 2012 Open Championship with just an hour remaining but after his collapse the 32-year-old is now 2/1 to win a major title in his career.
