Former long-time world number one Tiger Woods holds a one-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Australian Open.

Woods, who is aiming to end a two-year winless drought, made a fine start to end day one three shots off the lead, and he stepped up a gear on Friday with a five-under-par round that put him one shot ahead of second-placed Peter O’Malley, on nine-under.

The 35-year-old began his day with a birdie at the 10th and then picked up four more shots over a six-hole run starting at the 13th. Woods responded to his first bogey of the day, at the par-four third, with a 25-foot birdie putt at the very next hole, and he bounced back from another dropped shot at the par-four sixth with a further birdie at the eighth to complete his round in 67.

The American said afterwards: “Basically I felt that I never really missed a shot. Even though I shot five under today it felt like it could easily been eight or nine deep.

“I could have been a little lower on my first nine holes. I parred a couple of the par fives.

“It feels good that I am there playing properly. It’s not like I am slashing it all over the place.

“I am hitting the ball well. I have just hit so many lips these first two days.”

O’Malley moved into second with a bogey-free 66 that improved his total to eight-under, while fellow Australian Jason Day is third after a four-under-par 68 lifted his total to seven-under through 36 holes in Sydney.

Bubba Watson improved to six-under with a round of 70, while overnight leader Jarrod Lyle shot a two-over-par 74 to end the day five-under alongside Greg Chalmers, Rohan Blizard, Nick Watney and Matthew Jones.

Pre-tournament favourite Adam Scott is four-under after a mixed bag on Friday. The Australian shot an eagle, five birdies, four bogeys and a double-bogey in a one-under-par round, leaving him tied for 10th place with Joon-Woo Choi.
