The incredible Finca Cortesin plays host this week to one of Europe’s most prestigious golf tournaments, the Volvo World Match Play Championship, which features 24 of the world’s best golfers including the defending champion Ian Poulter 9/1, who makes his first appearance of the year on European soil.

Finca Cortesin is arguably the most spectacular golf resort in Europe and features the Cabell Robinson-designed 7,400 par 72 championship course which consists of wide, rolling bermuda-grass fairways, super-fast undulating greens, over 100 bunkers, blind tee-shots, sea breeze and vast changes in elevation that plays havoc on the players.

Finca Cortesin is a formidable test of golf and keeping the ball in play is the secret to success, so it may pay to follow solid ball strikers like Graeme McDowell, Martin Kaymer and Peter Hanson. Finca Cortesin’s vast length should favour big hitters like Sergio Garcia, Alvaro Quiros 20/1 and Nicolas Colsaerts 14/1, but bear in mind that Luke Donald made it all the way to the final last year and he’s relatively short from the tee. Finca Cortesin’s hilly terrain takes some walking so stamina looks set to play a role too and it may be a wise decision to side with a fresh player like Charl Schwartzel, who sat out last week’s Players Championship with upcoming events in mind.

The 24 players in this year’s Volvo World Match Play Championship are divided into eight groups of three and will play in a round-robin format on the opening two days of the tournament. The best 16 players will then progress to the knock-out stage on Saturday with the semi-final and final both taking place on Sunday. 16 players will be seeded in relation to their official world golf ranking with the remaining 8 drawn at random. All matches will take place over 18 holes.

There’s a strong international flavour to this year’s Volvo World Match Play field, with no fewer than 13 countries represented. Ian Poulter (9/1 Tournament Outright) returns to defend the crown he won 12 months ago but faces stiff opposition in the form of major champions Martin Kaymer (7/1), Graeme McDowell (14/1), Charl Schwartzel (10/1), Paul Lawrie (25/1), Darren Clarke (50/1) and Retief Goosen (33/1) and multiple winners Justin Rose (9/1), Thomas Bjorn (33/1) and Sergio Garcia (8/1). Throw in some more elite golfers like Peter Hanson (14/1), Brandt Snedeker (16/1), Camilo Villegas (28/1) and Robert Karlsson (22/1) and you have a world-class field assembled for what promises to be a hard-fought Volvo World Match Play Championship.

Volvo World Match Play Betting Tips:

Paul Lawrie 25/1

Lawrie is a fast-green specialist who overcame Justin Rose in the opening round of this year’s Accenture Match Play. He would eventually succumb to Martin Laird in the third round but since then Lawrie’s form has been impressive, carding back-to-back top 25 finishes at the Masters and Volvo China Open.

Peter Hanson 14/1

The Swede is one of the very few golfers who can combine driving distance with accuracy and that ability reaps rewards at Finca Cortesin. Hanson will prove an absolute nightmare to his opponents this week as he’s a birdie machine who hits every green-in-regulation and I expect a stupendous display of golf from him this weekend.

Charl Schwartzel 10/1

The South African skipped last week’s Players Championship with upcoming tournaments in mind and that decision could prove beneficial to him this week on a course that takes some getting over four days. Schwartzel keeps the ball in play off the tee, is a tremendous putter and looks a nice bet to go all the way in this year’s Volvo World Match Play Championship.
