The 2012 European Tour is expected to be one of the best in recent years, with six of the world’s top 10 players competing next year.

2011 saw Luke Donald emerge as the world number one and make history by becoming the only player to win both the European Tour and PGA Tour Order of Merit. Donald made just 13 starts on the European Tour in 2011. However, he was the model of consistency as he missed just one cut and finished outside the top 11 only one other time. The Englishman carded three titles, two seconds, a third and a fourth. For the season, Donald teed it up 25 times on the European and PGA Tours, missing only three cuts.

One gripe about his season was the lack of a Major success. Two majors gave him his worst performances of the season, however, he was fourth at the Masters and tied eight at the PGA Championship. You can expect more of the same in 2012 as Donald reaches his peak.

Despite the world’s best player not sinking a major, three other European Tour players claimed their first major wins.

Charl Schwartzel broke through at Augusta, where Rory McIlory had the third-round lead. As McIlroy struggled, Schwartzel broke through a crowd of eight players and finished with four straight birdies to close out his round and take the infamous green jacket. He also won the Joburg Open and finished inside the top-16 in eight of his 10 starts on the European Tour after the Masters victory. Schwartzel is only 27 and will believe he can become a real force on the European Tour in 2012.

German Martin Kaymer had a solid 2011 and will expect to push hard in 2012. Kaymer had wins in his first and next-to-last starts, while he also posted six top-10 finishes. However, he struggled in the majors, where he missed the cut in two of the four and his share of 12th at the British was his best finish.
