10 Golden Rules of Ryder Cup Betting

Ross Aylward - 18 Sep 2008

Ross offers some tips on how to find value at Valhalla.

1. First and foremost, shop around for value. The 21/20 on Europe has gone, but you can still get even money (Paddy Power, Betfred), while the best price on the Americans is 11/8 (Skybet). The tie is a best-priced 11/1 with Blue Square.

2. When punting on the matches, back the outsiders for value. At this level, any player can beat another player over 18 holes in matchplay, so look for possible upsets rather than bankers.

3. Back players who thrive as part of the team. Sergio Garcia is the prime example of a player who excels in this format. Perhaps having someone else to read the greens helps his normal suspect putting, while having team members rooting for him is another factor. Tiger Woods never looked motivated by team golf and there are still question marks over Phil Mickelson, although the absence of Woods this year might help him.

4. Back (to lay) the tie. While the Europeans have won the last two Ryder Cups by a record margin, the betting suggests that it will be closer this time, in which case it might be worth backing the tie with a view to trading out on Sunday. The current price of 13.0 (Betfair) could well be around 5.00 or 6.00 on Sunday if it's as close as expected.

5. Back the front-runners in fourballs. Fourballs, in which all four players hole out with the best score counting, are far less volatile than fourballs, so it is less likely that a pair will come back to win from behind.

6. Conversely, lay the front runner in foursomes. Foursomes, in which players alternate playing the same ball, are more volatile as one bad shot from either player is likely to determine the hole.

7. Don't assume that Europe will lose the singles. The Europeans are traditionally strong in the foursomes and fourballs, but they also lead the Americans in the singles over the last six encounters by 38.5 to 33.5.

8. When trying to predict the leading points scorer, it pays to side with the bleedin' obvious. Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood were tied at the top last time while Colin Montgomerie led the way in the previous three Ryder Cups. All three were challenging for favouritism, and Garcia looks a worthy market leader at 7/2 (Betfred) this time.

9. Snap up the free money. Bookmakers are falling over themselves to get your business this week meaning there's some terrific account opening offers. Both Boylesports and bet365 are offering all new customers up to £200 free bets, so there's never been a better time to sign up.

10. "More Ryder Cup markets than anyone else", say the bookmakers. It really is a punters dream, but can you see the wood (soz) through the trees? There are some seriously good concessions out there, including BetDirect's Cashback Special. Back either side before the start of play and, if the tournament is a tie, they'll give you your money back as cash (as opposed to free bets).

Good luck!
