Dublin v Louth tips - Dublin to win

Sunday’s challenge is unlikely to push the Dubs to the limit.

Pat Gilroy has been bullish this week about Dublin’s application and attitude in the run up to this clash. He even claims that they’ve forgotten 2011. It’s only in the white hot heat of championship that we’ll get to see if Dublin’s appetite to win back-to-back Sams is there. Unfortunately for neutrals, Sunday’s challenge is unlikely to push the Dubs to the limit.

Peter FitzPatrick is always bullish about Louth’s chances. A last-gasp toe poke from super-sub Danny O’Connor robbed Westmeath at the death in the opening round, though you’d be brave to approach PFitz about lucky goals… Joe Sheridan throwing in goals in Leinster finals and all that.

Paddy Keenan met his match in Westmeath’s John Heslin a fortnight ago, but expect him to have the run of it in Croker. Keenan’s midfield partner, Ronan Carroll, can also row in with scores, and the Dublin midfield may well have to have others on alert to cut off the threat posed by the two scoring midfielders.

Of concern for the underdogs is the weakness of their two ‘full’ lines. Their full-back line was under all sorts of pressure against Westmeath, so they could crack under the strain exerted by BB and Diarmuid Connolly.

Louth’s full-forward line looked less threatening than the contestants on ICA bootcamp. Their inside line managed just one point from play as Westmeath outscored Louth by 14 scores to 11. The best time to catch the Dubs may be the first round, but Louth look too short on personnel to avail of that slim chance.

Louth’s record against the Dubs is terrible, and if Dublin get going this could get uglier than a retired ginger boxer. However, with Dublin unlikely to be operating on full throttle and Louth’s midfield capable of dominating a complete tanking may be avoided.
